Wondo primary school was established in 1975 in Moshi rural district about 17 km from Moshi town. The school is located within Materuni village.
The school is situated along the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro around 1800 m surrounded by the forest and the banana plantations.
The school has 70 students ranging from 3-5 years old (kindergarten) 6-14 years old (primary) and 7 teachers including the head master. The students who are studying there are from the poorest families and so lack the basic supports and special needs. The class sessions start from 8:00 am up to 4:00 pm, during their time at school they only have one meal per day and when they go back home they can either eat again or not.
Project update!!!
As you can see the state of the building was in disrepair. The ceilings were partly broken meaning rainfall would flood the classrooms and there was no electricity.
Tunajali Tanzania saw the need to help the school and commenced renovation! Thanks to an incredible group of volunteers, Wondo Primary School now looks smart and tidy.
We want to give a huge shoutout to Laura Göbel for raising funds and supervising the project. You are inspirational!
If you also want to support the school with your donation we would be very happy. Every amount is much needed. Tunajali will make sure that your donation is used where it’s most needed.

Apart from the poor environment from the school, the school faces the following challenges:
-
There is no balanced diet for the pupils and their teachers because they have food in school only once a day. They serve ugali and beans everyday and they have nearly no chance to prepare enough food because they have often struggle to get the food contribution from the families.
-
Parents and guardians have not enough money for food. The government provides the free education to all the students but the parents and the guardians have to pay for the food which is around 15USD for one child a year
-
The school lacks school teaching equipment like desks, books, pencils, pens, mathematical sets, ruler and tables.
-
The pupils lack school uniforms, most of them have one pair of uniform throughout the academic year, yet the uniform they have are mostly not in a good condition. One pair of uniform per student costs 25USD and that includes shirts, skirts, shorts, socks, shoes and sweater.
-
The learning equipment are not enough for the students and so they need books, pencils, pens, ruler, eraser, mathematical set, sharpener and school bags.
-
The school lack the cleaning equipment for their classes and the toilets like soaps, brooms, toilet brushes, the detergents, squeezers, mopes, rakes, slashes, hoes, iron folk hoe, digging shovel, spades, and the watering can.
